Cone Wars
Often very simple exercises can be very effective for your players. A simple 1v1 where the players have to stay either side of a line and beat each other to a cone helps your players’ match day skills, says David Clarke.
Get to one of the cones first
This is a good way to warm young players up and get them to show off some of their skills. In this game the player with the ball has a choice of cones to the left or right and he has to get the ball to one of the cones before the defender opposite him.
Sell a dummy to the defender
To do this he has to sell a dummy, go towards one cone then fool the defender with a clever turn or move to either send him on his way or turn and leave the defender behind.
Your players must learn to win 1v1
This happens all over the pitch in football matches. Your players are constantly facing 1v1 situations where they have to beat a player in order to advance on goal. If you can get them doing it in training they will do it in matches.
THIS IS A GREAT NON-CONTACT EXERCISE USING THE TURNS AND MOVES IN A ONE-ON-ONE SITUATION.
Tell your players they must not dwell on the ball but keep it moving
* They must use moves and turns we have covered in Soccer Coach Weekly such as the drag back, Cruyff turn, stepovers, scissors, backheels etc to lose the defender.
* If there is a chance to score a point tell your players they must take it!
* The attacker should face the defender at all times so he knows his position.
* Keep the ball close to the body.
ADVANCE THE PRACTICE SO THAT THE ATTACKER HAS TO MAKE 3 DIFFERENT MOVES OR TURNS BEFORE HE CAN SCORE A POINT.
Key coaching tip: quick thinking and clever moves give your players the edge in match situations.
