The 4-4-2 formation
The 4-4-2 is unquestionably the most popular formation in soccer today. It replaced the outdated WM formation that was often used before the 1950 decade. This is the most balanced formation in soccer today which is one of the main reasons for why it is so popular. The formation consists of 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and two forwards/centers.
You may think that this formation would limit your teams scoring due to the lack of your forwards power but this is not the true. Playing in this formation, modifiers and the outside defenders will have much more permission to participate in the offensive which will hopefully result in more goals : - )
The 4-4-2 formation
The defenders in the 4-4-2 formation can play:
• In a Diamond formation (like in the 4-3-3)
• by having a sweeper/libero as the last man
If you play as a defender in the 4-4-2 formation you will have same responsibilities in defending as you would have in the 4-3-3 formation. When playing defender in a 4-4-2 formation you will also often get chance to use the offside trap. An offside trap is pretty efficient if used correctly, however, to master it your defense need to cooperate very well.
The midfield in a 4-4-2 formation consist of two wingers and two central midfielders. In most case, one of the central midfielders will usually play more offensive. By playing the right or left midfielder you will generally have same duties as if you were playing in the 4-3-3. The only difference is that one more player moves in. If you are the new moving player your position should be somewhere in the middle of the pitch alongside your central midfielder. Keep in mind to mark your opponent closely while playing in defense and also provide your teammates with passing alternatives in the offense game.
With your two teammates providing the width, it is up to you and the other central midfielder to decide when you should provide support to the forwards. However, some teams may prefer to have a player on the midfield who will act as a defensive shield in front of the defensive line. This position is known as the holding role and allows you (if you are playing on this position) and the other central midfielder to get forward and provide your forwards with support.
In most case, one player will have the role of attacking midfielder and the other will play as defensive midfielder, but this is something you and the other player has to clarify to each other. You and the other central midfielder may swap roles but must communicate and let each other know when a position switch is occurring.
The forwards
line consist of two players which must cooperate well through the entire match, and not separate themselves more than 10-20 yards. You and the other forward need also to work in defense by closing off angles. This is very important as you need to prevent your opponent’s defense to find their forwards with well aimed crosses. Usually, one of you should be a good runner and the other should be a good receiver.
