Portugal Soccer Team is playing in Group D along with Mexico, Iran and Angola. Portugal has participated in the World Cup thrice in 1966, 1986 and 2002. They were the losing finalists at the European Championships two years ago.
In their qualifying campaign, Portugal Soccer Team had nine wins and three draws from their 12 games. The team scored more goals than any other team in Europe. Striker Pauleta secured the top position in the continental scorer's chart because of the eleven goals he scored.
It is expected from the Portugal side that they'll reach the second round in Germany. In South Korea / Japan 2002, Portugal lost to USA and South Korea and did not proceed beyond the first stage.
Portugal Soccer Team faced its toughest matches against Liechtenstein. They had a 2-2 draw in Vaduz in October 2004. Within four days they went ahead and defeated Russia 7-1 in Lisbon. This defeat was considered their finest display in their Group 3 campaign. 12 months later they secured a 2-1 win in Aveiro. This FIFA season the Portugal Soccer Team will be taking part in their fourth FIFA World Cup finals campaign. The appearance in 1966 is still reminisced by Portuguese fans. Eusebio and the team successfully sailed to the semi-finals.
Luis Figo was on international exile after he withdrew from international football in July 2004. Now he has returned to take over as captain. Other players to watch are Cristiano Ronaldo, Midfielder Deco and defender Ricardo Carvalho.
